Paris, France - July 21, 1996
I flew on TWA flight 803 from Paris to New York only 4 days after the crash of TWA flight 800. It was on the same airline, same type of aircraft and same route (except in the reverse direction) as the ill-fated flight. At the time, it was believed that the accident was an act of terror. It turned out that it wasn’t. Was I scared? No. I figured that an event like that would not repeat itself anytime soon. Besides, air travel is still one of the safest modes of transportation. However, the French lady sitting next to me apparently didn’t think so and was petrified throughout most of the transatlantic flight. The Boeing 747 pictured here (the one I flew on) was only the 35th one built (out of more than 1200) and probably one of the oldest ones still flying at the time. Since then, this aircraft has been retired from service and is now stored in Marana, Arizona. (Photo by George Rizov)
