Audio Interview with Dominique Lapierre
Dominique Lapierre, author of Freedom at Midnight, O Jerusalem, and City of Joy, did extensive research in India. The emphasis of this 1985 interview with Don Swaim is focused on the stories and struggles that Lapierre observed in third world countries. The number of stories Lapierre tells about poverty and challenges to survive is amazing. The people in his stories are the true heroes.

My Odyssey - In 1944, when Communism devastated Eastern Europe, it uprooted millions, setting the new Displaced Persons adrift, most often to a tragic fate. By unusual luck, young Stephane Groueff, a Bulgarian, landed on more hospitable shores. Spared from the destruction of his family and home after a happy, privileged childhood in a small Balkan kingdom, his eventful Odyssey threw him into the fascinating life of a Paris-Match foreign correspondent, led him to romantic experiences lived against the backdrop of Montmartre nightclubs, Egyptian pyramids, opulent Irish castles or Alpine ski resorts and involved him in anti-Communist exile activities.

This is a video of Françoise Hardy singing Tous Les Garçons et les Filles (All the Boys and Girls).  She recorded this song in April 1962, shortly after finishing school and at the age of 18!  This song became a huge success in France and two million copies were sold.  1962 was also the year when I moved to Paris after I left Bulgaria, my homeland, and after escaping from the hell of communism.  I was only 6 years old back then and Françoise Hardy, along with Sylvie Vartan became my favorite singers.  I still listen to their wonderful music and I like their songs now just as much as I did when I was a kid.

Nino Ferrer - Le Téléphon (1966)
This is a video of Nino Ferrer singing Le Téléphon  (The Telephone).  This song came out in 1966 and became a big hit in France. I moved back to Paris (for the second time) in 1967 and I would hear this funny tune quite often back then.  Many of the words, which are in French, are intentionally mispelled and are pronounced differently and incorrectly just so that they rhyme with other words in the song!  This is one of the most hilarious songs I have ever heard.  Of course, you must understand French and know it fairly well in order to realize that many of the words are mispronounced.  The chorus goes like this:  Gaston y a l'téléfon qui son et y a jamais person qui y répond which means Gaston, the telephone is ringing but nobody ever answers it.  The arrangement of this song is excellent, particularly the horn parts and especially the bariton saxophon! However, the lip-synching in this video is way off!

Sylvie Vartan
Sylvie Vartan was born on August 15, 1944 in Iskretz, a small town in the Balkans, in Bulgaria. Her parents were Georges (who worked in the French embassy) and her mother Ilona who was Hungarian. Sylvie has a brother named Eddie who was seven years old when she was born.  After Bulgaria had been invaded by the soviets in September, their house was confiscated and the Vartans had to move to Sofia.  “My life changed a lot” Sylvie said in the magazine Discorevue in 1962: “It was like any other little girl’s life in the city, nothing out of the ordinary.  But then something big happened.  A friend of my father, a director, was making a movie about the war between Turkey and Bulgaria.  He gave me a small part as a schoolgirl.  I was very young but it had a lasting impression on me.  It made me want to work in the entertainment industry.  After that, I often dreamed of becoming an entertainer.”

This song originally came out in 1967.  I was 11 years old back then and lived in Paris.  This is the cutest silly love song that I have ever heard and the lyrics are really adorable.  It is definitely one of my all-time favorite songs, after La Maritza. Some other artists (like France Gall) have recorded it, too, but only Sylvie Vartan sings it the right way.

Born August 15, 1944, in Iskretz, Bulgaria, Vartan showed great talent for both acting and singing at an early age, resulting in an appearance in the Bulgarian film "Under The Yoke" in 1950. Two years later Vartan and her family relocated to France. 1961 would prove to be an important year for Vartan's career, as she entered a recording studio for the first time, picked up some TV work, and appeared at the famed Olympia Theater.

This song and video of Si Je Chante  (If I Sing, It’s For You) by Sylvie Vartan was recorded in Nashville. It was a song that I liked a lot as I was growing up in Paris and I listened to it often when I visited my neighbor’s apartment in Bois-Colombes, a suburb on the outskirts (banlieu as they say in French) of Paris.  Brenda Lee originally recorded this song in 1963 and it was called My Whole World Is Falling Down.

Sylvie Vartan was present at this special event which took place at the Hôtel de Paris in Monte-Carlo and whose main goal was to raise money for the forgotten children. A raffle and an auction was held and all proceeds went go to the Sylvie Vartan Association for Underprivileged Children.  I attended this very special event, which was for a very good cause and it was the most memorable night of my entire life!

Sylvie Vartan Association for Underprivileged Children
The children are our future.  It is up to us, who are the more fortunate, to give them the opportunity to live their lives with dignity and hope.  How rewarding it is to be able to know that you saved a child.  Please, be as generous as you can.  Working together we can make a difference. - Sylvie Vartan

Sylvie Vartan Show
Sylvie Vartan recorded her first song at the age of 16.  By the time she was 19, she did concerts alongside the Beatles and became the biggest new singing sensation in France.  Sylvie Vartan was greeted by the American press as “The most beautiful gift from France since the statue of liberty!”.  In my opinion, Sylvie Vartan was also the best Christmas present from Bulgaria to France: She was born in Bulgaria and arrived in Paris on Christmas Eve in 1952!
